Every year we come into January with grand expectations and an optimism for the year, and every year the bleakness of the January month brings all of that expectant enthusiasm crashing back down. Already we’ve had a dark, a freezing cold, a windy, and a very snowy (in some parts) month on account of the weather bomb that was Storm Goretti. After the expensiveness of December, no doubt you’ll always be having a more frugal month as you stretch until that first pay day of the year. If you’re doing dry January then you also won’t even be able to have a drink to relax a little at the end of the working week, either.
All this typically combines together to give us what is known as Blue Monday in the third week of the month. It is an admission that culturally, emotionally, and financially January can be a difficult month. It is easier to feel down when you don’t have the funds to go out spending and celebrating, or when it is so cold out and seemingly always dark with no sign of the sun anywhere.
