On the 14th of August 2025, history was made at Cottam Power Station in Retford, Nottinghamshire, as eight 375-foot-tall cooling towers were demolished simultaneously, setting a Guinness World Record for the greatest number of cooling towers demolished in one go . This remarkable event attracted 100 guests, including former employees and local dignitaries, who gathered to witness the spectacle.
The demolition was executed with precision by demolition specialists Brown & Mason, employing half a tonne of explosives to bring down the towering structures in a controlled explosion that lasted just 10 seconds . The event marked the final major milestone in the decommissioning of the former coal-fired power station, which had been operational since 1968 and was capable of supplying electricity to 3.7 million homes at its peak .
