Racing Hog Roast

We had our event catering trailer at Market Rasen races last month and I’m happy to report that the British summer did nothing to dampen the appetites of our customers! On the day, we had so much rain that the racing was almost completely washed out – but the show went on and so did Spitting Pig Lincolnshire!

As always at any event, we came prepared (checking the weather forecast helped in this instance), putting up an awning extension to protect our customers as they enjoyed their sumptuous roasted meat. And they needed this cover as we had torrential rain!

Of course, we expected non-customers to shelter underneath there too – but that is when the magic happened, when non-customers suddenly became Spitting Pig customers. Trapped by a wall of rain and grateful for the cover provided by our awning, racegoers were helpless to resist as the seductive smell of slowly rotating, seasoned meat crackled only a few feet away. With the choice of meats we had on offer (not only pork but chicken and beef too), we ensured a wonderful taste experience for everyone.

You can imagine the scene: dozens of soaked racegoers huddled in our shelter, noses twitching like the Bisto kids of old, heading to our counter in droves to find out what the wonderful succulent aromas were. Picture their delighted faces as they watched the traditional hog-roast turning and crackling before their eyes as they drank in those delightful smells. Then picture the scene with dozens of contented faces chomping away on tasty roast pork, chicken and beef (some people did combos!), as they scanned race cards before braving the rain to wager on the next race.

Our trailer/tent was by far the busiest outside caterer (in fact we had people coming through the rain from the covered stands to queue for our delicious food). The rain failed to dampen spirits and there was such great banter and fun with customers that we’re already looking forward to the next race meeting, whatever the weather!

We’re always looking at fresh ways to promote Spitting Pig in Lincolnshire. Our food promotes itself, but on this occasion the small awning and the British summer also helped! At Market Rasen Racecourse, we demonstrated our outstanding array of slowly roasted meats – served up with a smile by our ever-helpful staff. And this has already helped us secure future bookings, with scores of customers taking our card on the day.   When thinking of catering for events, we know that some people never think to look beyond basic, traditional options. They may see our trailer at a public event and think that is all we do. However, when they realise that we actually offer this succulent catering for weddings and parties of all sizes, most people can’t ask for a quote quickly enough!

We don’t need a hard sell to do this. It only takes a few dozen cards on the counter. We just leave our mouth-watering meat – served with genuine enthusiasm by staff who know their meat and how best to cook it – to sell itself. And it always does!
